Learning: A Day-to-Day Activity

The purpose of a learning initiative is behavior change: the sustained integration of new skills. This requires consistent leadership messaging, accountability and measurement, in addition to delivery. On the minds of learning leaders everywhere is the “businessification” of the learning function. There are four key drivers of behavior change that leverage classroom learning for ultimate impact:

		1. Learning clearly tied to business goals

		2. Leadership messaging

		3. Actively involved manager

		4. Metrics and measurement

Learning cannot align with business goals without understanding the specific issues, challenges and problems that the company is facing, along with how those relate to current learning and development needs. We need to be responsive on the spot to a business need and we may have to “punt” with acumen and accuracy, as opposed to not reacting because it is not in the training calendar. Learning leaders must know the business their organization is in down cold. Sometimes this requires that learning be able to sell itself to non-learning leaders. Employ these five tips:

			Understand the business

Know how to sell and, in so doing, understand the features and benefits of your produce and how they address the business need of your customer.

Live the value proposition of your learning product. Get out there and be your biggest champion.

Respond to customer requests with a customer service attitude.

Demonstrate the value of the products and the way learning i8ntegrates with overall strategy by having a learning team that is composed of true consultants, individuals who are on the cutting edge of their abilities, as able to lead enterprise-wide initiatives and speak the language of their constituents.

The most effective organization is an interdependent, cross-functional one. So, it is true for learning: keep it in a silo and it will stay there with minimum impact. Integrate it into the life and breath of the company and it is here that learning creates true value through improved business results.

Adult Learning Principles to Consider When Using Web 2.0

What is Web 2.0? Web 2.0 consists of online web-based programs that enable individuals to communicate by providing discussion comments to a single location. This method of communication facilitates the ability for multiple subscribers to create a dialogue without having to provide an immediate response to the forum. Online/distance learning has included Web 2.0 enfironment in academic settings for some time now.

Why it Works There are no important differences when transferring knowledge between online environments and face-to-face, except for the facilitator’s involvement in the dialogue. Leaders who are successful at transferring knowledge in a face-to-face platform and who also desire success in a Web w.o environment need to know how the employee obtains and shares knowledge online.

The concept entertains the idea that adult learners desire to set their own objectives and only want to learn what they feel is needed. The forum needs a coach, not a dictator, to ensure that employees have an effective means of expressing their concerns, successes, and frustrations, as well as getting advice from leaders. Facilitators must consistently read comments and engage in the discussion as participants, sharing their own professional stories, advice and resources, and pose intriguing questions that generate continued discussion. Facilitators must recognize contributions of shared knowledge or story telling . Adults enjoy opportunities to apply the knowledge they receive because it reinforces their own learning. Leaders can increase employees’ participation in the transfer of organizational knowledge by closely relating knowledge to their changing social roles. The transfer of organizational knowledge must be relevant to the employee. People learn better when they are actively engaged in tasks that are directly related to their needs.

It is imperative that facilitators constantly monitor the dialogue within the online discussion and react to the employee responses, as most of adult learning occurs within the framework of projects and situations they are experiencing or would be likely to encounter. Constant dialogue with employees may promote a more productive learning community and increased collaboration within the organization.

eLearning Special Interest Group - ASTD Sacramento

Patti Diamond-Locke of the Alta California Regional Center initiated the group and we had our first meeting at her company in February. In March, Dawn Hanley had us over to VSP to show us some of their development facilities and online training products. In April Tina Shaw hosted our meeting and presented some of her recent online training presentations for employees at her company, Pick-n-Pull.

Everyone in the group is fairly new to online training and authoring tools, so we are helping each other, sharing our experiences, and acquiring best practices from each other. We meet mid-day (11am-1pm) and meeting dates and topics have been sort of organic, with individuals offering to host the group and members suggesting topics of interest to the group. Others interested in sharing online training experiences, expertise, and topics are always welcome.

Patti Diamond-Locke reports, "We had a great gathering of the e-learning sig on May 26th. I showed parts of an online class we had just completed here at CCE, using Dreamweaver and Flash. Andrea Shea, CCE Manager of Online Learning Services, talked about Moodle and how we have applied it here for both Academic and public training programs. Jose showed examples of his work in Captivate, which included audio and animation characters from AnimationFactory.com; also he showed the LMS systems used by his organization.

Many of us are beginning to use authoring tools to put more and more of our training online, so the group had the idea to make our next meeting a hands-on workshop on Articulate. And expanding on that idea, the group would take up a project to collaboratively develop an online training on a topic relevant to ASTD to post on the ASTD Sacramento website.

Summer will be here soon, so most likely we will meet only one time in late July or August. At that meeting—perhaps the workshop-- we can more fully develop our group project idea.

If you have a training topic that you think would lend itself to an online presentation for ASTD members, let the group know. We can set our own schedule for developing the collaborative project, but the group thought a reasonable timeline would be to have an online training ready to publish on the ASTD Sacramento website by January."

NEXT MEETING (TBD) July-August - meet one time over the summer to discuss collaborative project. AND hands-on Articulate workshop co-presented by e-learning sig members.

Email the group at mail@astdsac.org if:

1) you would like to help co-present an Articulate workshop

2) you would like to host an Articulate workshop at your site

3) there are dates in July/August you prefer for the next meeting

4) other ideas to share and present at future e-learning sig meetings

What is Resiliency?

Resiliency is the ability to spring back from and successfully adapt to adversity. An increasing body of research from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and sociology is showing that most people–including young people–can bounce back from risks, stress, crises, and trauma and experience life success.

Our favorite definition of resiliency, in fact, was given by a 15-year-old high school student who, after a semester of resiliency training, described resiliency as: "Bouncing back from problems and stuff with more power and more smarts."

Researchers are concluding that each person has an innate capacity for resiliency, "a self-righting tendency" that operates best when people have resiliency-building conditions in their lives.

People also successfully overcome life difficulties by drawing upon internal qualities that research has shown are particularly helpful when encountering a crisis, major stressor, or trauma. The following list can be thought of as a "personal resiliency builder" menu. No one has everything on this list. When "the going gets tough" you probably have three or four of these qualities that you use most naturally and most often.

It is helpful to know which are your primary resiliency builders; how have you used them in the past; and how can you use them to overcome the present challenges in your life. You can also decide to add one or two of these to your "resiliency-builder" menu, if you think they would be useful for you.

Put a + by the top three or four resiliency builders you use most often. Ask yourself how you have used these in the past or currently use them.

Lights, Camera, Learning!

Video is the single most disruptive force on the horizon. In the next 36 months, the footprint of video content, video stories, video communication and video collaboration will rapidly expand in organizational learning. Several ideas that contribute to the rise in videos for learning are:

Demand for stories, stories, and more stories. Learners are craving stories as a bigger part of their learning content. Homegrown videos from peers, subject matter experts, customers or competitors will become a larger part of video content.

· The rise of point and shoot, high-definition “flip cams”. For example, cameras were distributed to six participants, who were asked to shoot footage over three days. In just a few hours, these participants learned how to frame and edit a cohesive and compelling story. A videographer taught them to take a series of video stills that would miss with audio to teach or illustrate a keep point. This was done with cameras that cost less than $150 each.

· Simpler editing. Editing can be done with online resources, such as including embedded links to intranet or external sites. We will see a shift of videoconferencing from hardware, room0based, complex technology to a click-and-connect resource. The implications for learning are:

o Virtual teamwork

o Telepresence

It is critically important for learning leaders to become more comfortable, experimental and skillful when deploying video content, stories, and communication. With limited budgets, this is a no-brainer in terms of low-cost technology and innovation.

Marjorie, tell us what you do professionally? I have been lucky to work as an Instructional Designer for the past 17 years! My strength lies in engaging and motivating learners through creative storylines and scenarios. One of my favorite projects was developing audio-based customer service training for the California State Automobile Association in the style of an old-time radio drama. Most recently, I worked on a project developing the California Division of State Architect's training academy. I also fill in occasionally as an on-air announcer for Northstate Public Radio in Chico. Prior to that, I developed instructor-led and blended learning courses for Internet-based software companies, including two that were acquired by Oracle and PeopleSoft. Early in my career, I worked for a SF-based...
