June Member of the Month The Sacramento ASTD Member of the Month for June is Marjorie Shepard. Marjorie, tell us what you do professionally? I have been lucky to work as an Instructional Designer for the past 17 years! My strength lies in engaging and motivating learners through creative storylines and scenarios. One of my favorite projects was developing audio-based customer service training for the California State Automobile Association in the style of an old-time radio drama. Most recently, I worked on a project developing the California Division of State Architect's training academy. I also fill in occasionally as an on-air announcer for Northstate Public Radio in Chico. The Sacramento Chapter of ASTD is excited that you have decided to renew your membership. Please follow the simple steps below to renew your membership online.

1. Login from the Home Page.

2. Select the Membership Module.

3. Select My Membership.

4. Select Renew.

Once you select renew then you will be taken to an online form where you will:

verify your membership information
choose a membership type ($60-renewal)
choose a payment method
choose to complete the renewal
select an "active" renewal status
and then click "Renew Membership".

As incoming President for 2010, I want to take this opportunity to thank Carol Christensen for her dedication and hard work. Carol’s commitment to Sacramento ASTD has been a driving force in seeing the chapter through what has been a difficult year for ASTD. Membership has been down locally and nationally as a result of many companies’s cutting back on financial support for their training professionals. One of the outstanding accomplishments for ASTD Sacramento was the development of a well thought out 5 Year Strategic Plan. One of my major goals as President is to work the plan and grow membership. I want to continue the emphasis on the “For Profit Sector” and launch a major effort at recruiting membership in the government and nonprofit sectors. The Fundamentals for Professional Trainers conference for new and experienced trainers will be presented as a three-part series on Fridays beginning in May, 2010.
The ASTD (American Society of Training and Development) Competency Model is the foundation behind the high quality, value driven
train-the-trainer event for professional skills in assessing,
creating, and delivering employee and non-profit learning and development.
Attend this regional event for professional skills provided by ASTD Sacramento.

past events,
payments (invoices),
last membership join date, and
next expiration date.

After logging in, review your infomation under the picture box. Hey...add a picture while you are there! Expand the ability of others to contact you by adding Web identities and additional contact information!

Be sure to keep your member demographic information and work information current. It is also extremely helpful if you also let us know if you are a national member or not yet.

Talent Bank Directory

The ASTD Sacramento Talent Bank contain profiles of members’ expertise and specialty offerings. Employed professionals and independent consultants alike complete a survey in order for the chapter to collect categorical information.

When a new member joins, the application form creates a profile with employment information, additional contact information and other options. Members can opt out of having their profiles viewable by others by sending a request to mail@astdsac.org .

Casual visitors and registered users of the website can access the Directory module of the website. After log in, the user receives the screen with several icons including the Directory icon (book). The Directory has various categories of expertise where the visitor can search by a specific skill set (for example: Instructional Design) and receive a list of members with that expertise.

Members are invited to submit several directory listings under the specific category areas. To do so, access the directory icon/module of the website, click Add and fill out the information, selecting the category each time, and submit. You will need to start a new directory listing for each area of expertise in order to be located in several categories.

Monthly Programs

Our chapter’s monthly meetings provide a casual setting to sit with other professionals from a variety of industries and workplaces. Many meetings include a networking activity or small group activity based on the speaker’s topic. We encourage all participants to extend their personal introduction and inquire information from others. Bring your business cards and trade with other participants. Make a quick note on the collected cards about an interesting fact or shared connection; then email that person later to keep the connection going.

Special Networking Events

At least once a year the chapter devotes an entire event to networking with peers and new faces in the Sacramento area. Hiring employers and leaders in need of consultants often attend as well. Watch for chapter invitations and check the Calendar (link) of events for our next networking event or other opportunities to connect and expand your network. Sacramento ASTD has a discussion group on LinkedIn! Take advantage of the many contacts that are available to network with your peers and colleagues locally, as well as nationally.

Now is also a good time to update your own LinkedIn profile with information about your services, expertise, background, etc. Remember that every word you use in your profile becomes a potential search word. Also take advantage of the discussion feature to reach out to the entire Sacramento WLP community!

Chapter Service Volunteer The chapter is operated completely by volunteers! The Board of Directors, project leaders, special interest group leaders, and monthly program speakers donate their time and expertise in support of local training and development professionals at all stages of their careers. Many levels of volunteers are needed to successfully function as a vibrant chapter: Single Event Volunteers Become a greeter at one or more monthly program meetings Assist with committee work for one or more special events or learning conferences Work behind the scenes to secure corporate or other sponsor donations of meeting space, meals, or in-kind donations (such as free printing) Project Leaders Help create a new service such as resume building, interview skills, or job search strategies Lead a special interest group such as the CPLP study group, mentor new members, or organize a learning leaders’ network Board of Directors The chapter Board consists of the...
